To accommodate the retrieval of the free Landsat imagery, a new archive has been established at the USGSEROS Center Web site: http://landsat.usgs.gov/landsat/. This USGSEROS Center archive is a single-user account, but will be upgraded to support multiple users when free Landsat imagery is available. The USGSEROS Center archive provides access to the primary USGS archive that contains Landsat imagery acquired from 1976 to the present. It also provides access to the USGS-EROS Center archive that contains Landsat images acquired beginning in 1999. In addition to the current imagery, the USGSEROS Center archive contains image metadata information, which will allow users to identify the dates of image collection, acquire historical imagery, and query desired dates. The USGSEROS Center archive is included with the Landsat user's subscription to the USGS Data Distribution Center. It is also accessed free of charge through the USGS Web site by researchers who are not associated with the USGS. Users can also access the Landsat imagery free of charge through the USGS Web site by going to the Landsat archive page: http://landsat.usgs.gov/landsat/landsat_archives/landsat/index.html. Image metadata is available on the Landsat archive page. The user's USGS Data Distribution Center subscription level is required to view the current Landsat archive. A daily Landsat archive update is available through the Landsat archive page, with images being provided by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). A Landsat archive subscription is required to retrieve these images. The Landsat archives will be expanded to include the full Landsat 7 ETM+ archive acquired since 1999. This will include all newly acquired Landsat 7 ETM+ scenes that have less than 40 percent cloud cover. In addition to these Landsat archives, Landsat 8 will be launched in 2010.
Roadrunner is a petascale system with >10 petabytes of RAM and >500 petabytes of disk storage. It is built using a hybrid computing model with 68,000-node High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster and a 10-PetaBytes-per-second (PB/s) HPC file system. The HPC system has just completed its first production run of 10.5 years. Roadrunner can provide a number of services including, but not limited to, petabyte-scale cluster, petabyte-scale storage, petaflop-scale memory intensive applications, petaflop-scale data intensive applications, petabytes-scale scientific and engineering applications, and petaflop-scale real-time computing. The 10.5 year production run is now under the control of the J. Richard Bechtel Center for Science, Engineering and Public Policy (http://www.jrb-csepp.org/).
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
