Here are the three most important places to look for how to date a Fender amp: tube chart code, transformer date codes, and the speaker date code. Since the serial numbers on Fender guitar amplifiers were pre-stamped on the chassis before the amp was assembled, they're not a very good way to date the amp.
Unfortunately, Fender amplifier serial numbers are specific to each model. Not only that, they're not necessarily sequential, and even if they were, Fender never released the records of how many they made during the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. We don't have documentation to cross reference these numbers so any attempt to date with a serial number is often a few years off. For this reason, Fender amp serial numbers are usually not very helpful to answer the question of how to date a Fender amp.
A date code is required for all fabricated Fender amplifiers manufactured between 1990 and today. The QA (quality assurance) sticker is on the chassis of the amplifier. On older models, the serial number can be found on the right side of the chassis. The most recent models have a sticker.
Interestingly, some silverface amps from early 1968 have 16 inch tilt backlegs with serial numbers on one or both legs. Tilt back legs with serialnumbers were used only on the speaker cabinets of piggyback amps. Oneof the legs on the cabinet would have the number while the other would simplybe stamped with "Pat. Pend." In 1967, CBS Fender discontinued the smallcabinet design Bassman and Bandmaster an introduced new, larger cabs withoutlegs. Apparently, Fender had a surplus of 16 inch Bassman/Bandmaster tilt back legs with serial numbers on them. Rather than waste them, they were used on combo amps such as the Twin Reverb and Pro Reverb.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the chassis date stamp became more cryptic. For example, a chassis stamp of 1831 must be read backward to reveal thedate, in this case week 13 of 1981. If you see a chassis stamp andyou don't have any other dating info, please send it along with the serialnumber and model name to us, thanks!
As you can see, we do get quite a bit of data without any date code info which create "holes" in the database. This is problematic, but lately folks are feeling more comfortable finding the transformer date codes and sending them to us with the serial number/model name for their silverface amps. 2b1af7f3a8
