We extracted the top 10% of areas with the highest integrated expansion and intensification potentials to create comparable scenarios of future agricultural pathways. The expansion scenario allowed 7.3 million km2 of land to be converted into farmland in places with the highest 10% of expansion potential. The intensification scenario allowed closing yield gaps on 10% of land with the highest intensification potential, up to a level that resulted in the same global production gain. We applied both scenarios in the CGE model DART-BIO to quantify their impact on agricultural markets in terms of crop production, prices, trade and consumption. CGE models solve for balance between supply and demand with flexible prices. For reference, we compared the impact to a 2030 reference scenario that carried forward current trends in demographic growth, gross domestic products and trade policies taking into account that with higher incomes preferences change towards e.g. livestock products.
