Moviegoers who like to see their movies with gusto will enjoy Spike Lee's drama ``Roots,'' a story about the descendants of slaves in the United States. A Harvard-educated minister (Denzel Washington) travels to the American South to investigate the story of his own ancestors, who were slaves. Many of Lee's best qualities are on display here: his earthy humor, his passion, his ability to reach out to a wide audience, and a knowledge of history that expands the scope of the film's politics and entertainment. Film buffs will also appreciate the appearance of one of the preeminent filmmakers of the 1970s. Lee was a student of Stanley Kubrick during the director's stint at the New York University Film School and Lee's style is strikingly similar to Kubrick's. Though he has drawn on his knowledge of history to make a film that's intelligent and beautiful to look at, Lee's film is more than a fashion statement. He uses history and politics, with the backdrop of New York City, to inform a story about overcoming the double bind of the past and the present and becoming a better person by making the most of what's available. Lee's approach is refreshingly egalitarian. His film has a political center that is the most radical and inclusive of recent Hollywood films.
