The game was, of course, inspired by the Earthbound series, most notably its first game, Earthbound. It was created as a memento to the original developer of Earthbound, Shigesato Itoi, who left Shouji Ôtori's comp shop in 1995 when it was clear that it would be merged into another company. It was made by a previously obscure developer named Toby Fox, who was inspired by the game of turn-based role-playing games he played growing up, and the easier-to-beat final boss in Earthbound was his own phobia.[8] A party member (at fault for but not caused by the death of Little Sister) would be mercilessly murdered, while the player and his party member would sing about it, months later, as a good omen. Itoi would later become the producer of the Undertale sequel, "Brother".[9]
Along with suitably delicious elements, some of the gameplay mechanics of the game are influenced by gold, the Japanese version of which is called jōzu.[10] For example, the word/symbol for the Undertale protagonist is jōzu. Although it is impossible to distinguish the difference between the protagonist and antagonist, human-like monsters called Viscera seek to spill jōzu (which translates as blood).[11] In the game, everyone is affected by jōzu but the player character is able to control how much he can handle. People with more jōzu have a higher tolerance; they do not die from VomitBile, and do not age either. Other people have high jōzu; they can eat the Vomit Bile and still be able to fight, but they age mentally and physically.
Between the main character, the underground labyrinth he is in, and the Vomit Bile that leaks into everything, the game is highly interactive. Players can affect gameplay by uncovering a treasure chest, getting the player character to fall off a ledge, or using items found in the game. If the player character takes too much damage before he can reach the end of the game, he will die, and that is the end of the game. In that case, it is possible to go back and replay the level if playing on a new difficulty. d2c66b5586
